Gelair Tea Tree Oil

What is Gelair?

Gelair is a patented specially formulated gel matrix containing top quality Australian tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is produced by distilling the leaves of the Australian plant Melaleuca alternifolia . When placed in an air handling unit (AHU) or fan coil unit (FCU), the gel matrix releases specific concentrations of tea tree oil vapour throughout the air-conditioning system. As tea tree oil is a broad spectrum anti-microbial and anti-fungal agent, the tea tree oil vapour kills bacteria, viruses and mould in the entire air-conditioning system – cooling coils, fan blowers and air-ducts – and the occupant spaces.

Enhancing Indoor Environmental Quality

It is not only desirable, but also a fundamental human right to live and work in spaces with healthy indoor environments . By destroying microbes and other harmful pathogens, Gelair creates a safe, healthy and productive working and living environment.

The tea tree oil in Gelair kills all three categories of infectious organisms:

•  Bacteria (antiseptic/bactericide)

•  Viruses (viricide)

•  Fungi, moulds and mildew (fungicide)

MRSA Bacteria

H1N1 Viruses

E. Coli Bacteria

Australian tea tree oil kills Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, even stubborn germs like Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus ( MRSA ), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli (E. coli) and Legionella Pneumophila (Legionnaires' disease). MRSA has been termed ‘hospital super-bug' because of its resistance to methicillin and vancomycin antibiotics.

Research has also shown that tea tree oil has an antiviral activity against influenza A/PR/8 virus subtype H1N1 and that antiviral activity has been principally attributed to terpinen-4-ol, the main active component of tea tree oil. ( Garozzo A., Timpanaro R., Bisignano B., Furneri P.M., Bisignano G., Castro A. In vitro antiviral activity of Melaleuca alternifolia essential oil”, Lett Appl Microbiol. 2009 Dec;49(6):806-8. Epub 2009 Sep 18.)

Gelair is penetrating – its vapours penetrate into porous materials, where they provide a lasting protection. The vapours saturate the air, spread by diffusion and chase biological pathogens into low-ventilated corners and even into sheetrock, ceilings, upholstery, and carpeting.

How is Gelair Installed?

Gelair is easily installed. Open up the packaging and place the Gelair block in the AHU between the filter and the cooling coil. Gelair is supplied in a vacuum bag so some of the solution will be left in the packaging. This can simply be poured into the AHU and will help give an initial burst of tea tree oil vapour into the system.

What does Gelair Smell Like?

The natural smell of Gelair is from the tea tree oil. When Gelair is first inserted into the system, occupants would notice a faint tea tree odour which most people describe as “clean” and “fresh”. This initial scent is the best way to be sure the Gelair block is releasing optimal concentrations of tea tree oil throughout the system and reassures the occupants that the room is treated for mould, bacteria and viruses.

Gelair Efficacy Data

A sample of Gelair solution was tested by TUV SUD PSB for its bactericidal and fungicidal activity in accordance to the BS:EN 1040:200 standard. The results are tabulated below:

Bacteria % Kill
MRSA (Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus) 99.9993%
Legionella pneumophila 99.9995%

Gelair Block Life Span and Sizing

Gelair comes in 4 sizes (0.5l, 1l, 2l and 4l). The size required depends on the amount of air passing through the AHU. Each Gelair block lasts between 6 to 8 weeks. Sizing requirements are summarized in the table below.

System Capacity (AHU Air Flow) Gelair AB Size
Up to 1,000 CFM AB 0.5
1,000 to 2,000 CFM AB 1.0
2,000 to 3,000 CFM AB 2.0
3,000 to 5,000 CFM AB 4.0

Gelair Solution

The anti-bacteria benefits of Gelair are also available in solution form.

Gelair Solution provides the perfect tool to clean cooling coils, condensate trays and other areas exposed to fungal and bacterial growth.

The Gelair matrix block and Gelair solution complement each other to provide a comprehensive all-natural solution to disinfect and cleanse the entire air-conditioning system.

- A Unique IAQ Solution

The processing and refining of tea tree oil is an exact science and due to the complexities, not all tea tree oil is the same. Gelair was developed in Australia, with oil sourced from local tea tree farmers. To ensure efficacy, every batch of tea tree oil used in Gelair products is chemically analysed to confirm it meets the highest standards.
